Check out this fun and simple placemat with the guests name written directly on the paper.
The decorative scrapbooking papers, out there, are so beautiful and there are so many to choose from. You are sure to find one or some to match your party decor.
I have had this photo in my computer as an idea, and I was not thinking to take note of the web site I found it on. I will look for it and post it here, or I will create a few placesettings myself to show you some alternative ideas.

the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends."

Last minute party and no table decorations? How about fresh or faux flower heads in a martini glass. Line them up down the center of the table with candles in between, next to each place setting, or on top of the dishes.
You can even take a permanent marker and write your guests name on the stem base (it wipes off with nail polish remover, but check on a small spot first)
Got plans to dance the night away, but no time to go buy the shoes needed to "cut-a-rug"? Chinese Laundry might have what you are looking for. I personally like to try my shoes on first, but for you lucky ducks, that fit your size all of the time, this company has tons of party shoes!

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 tablespoons seedless strawberry jam
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1 large egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
2 cups chopped frozen cheesecake
Cooking spray
Butter, confectioners' sugar or whipped cream, for topping (optional)
Directions:
Mix the strawberries, jam and 2 tablespoons warm water in a bowl; set aside. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
Pulse the flour, buttermilk, egg, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a blender until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the cheesecake pieces, keeping them whole.
Coat a large nonstick skillet or griddle with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Working in batches, pour about 1/4 cup batter into the skillet for each pancake. Cook until bubbly on top, about 4 minutes, then flip and cook until the other side is golden brown, about 2 more minutes. Transfer the finished pancakes to a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven. Serve the pancakes topped with the strawberry sauce; top with butter, confectioners' sugar or whipped cream, if desired.

Cheesecake Pancake Recipe arrived in my mailbox the same morning I was making plain-ole-pancakes. Thank you Food Network.
